Discovering AI — What Is It and Why Does It Matter?
Understanding AI in everyday language
  • What is Artificial Intelligence? Understanding AI through simple, familiar examples.
  • Where do we encounter AI in daily life? From smartphones and online shopping to maps, social media, and customer service.
  • Traditional AI vs Generative AI: What is the difference between AI that recognises patterns and AI that creates content?
  • Meet your AI assistant: An introduction to tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini.
  • What AI can and cannot do: Understanding its strengths, limitations, and common misconceptions.
Practical activity: Spot the AI. Participants identify where AI is already used in their daily lives and explore a live demonstration of an AI assistant answering a simple question.
  • Getting started: How to access and interact with an AI assistant using everyday language.
  • The art of asking: How to give clear instructions, relevant context, and the type of answer you want.
  • From basic to better results: See how improving a question can transform the answer.
  • Continue the conversation: Asking follow-up questions, requesting examples, changing tone, and refining responses.
  • Explore different possibilities: Generate ideas, write messages, summarise information, explain difficult topics, and translate text.
Practical activity: The prompt challenge. Participants use an AI assistant to draft an email, plan an outing, explain an unfamiliar topic, or solve a simple everyday problem. They improve the results by changing their instructions.
  • AI as your personal assistant: Planning schedules, organising tasks, preparing checklists, and managing everyday activities.
  • AI for communication and creativity: Writing emails, improving documents, brainstorming ideas, and creating social media content.
  • AI for learning and research: Understanding complex subjects, summarising lengthy information, learning languages, and exploring new interests.
  • Beyond text: An introduction to AI-generated images, voice, presentations, and working with documents or pictures.
  • Finding the right tool for the task: Understanding free and paid options, their practical uses, and when a specialist tool may be useful.
Practical activity: Solve a real-life challenge. Each participant chooses a task from their own life or work and uses AI to produce something useful, such as a weekly plan, a polished letter, a simple budget template, or a learning plan.
  • When AI gets it wrong: Understanding inaccurate answers, made-up information, and why confident responses are not always correct.
  • Think before you trust: Checking facts, comparing sources, and recognising when human expertise is essential.
  • Protecting your privacy: What you should and should not share with AI tools, including personal, financial, and confidential information.
  • Responsible AI use: Recognising bias, respecting copyright, avoiding misuse, and keeping human judgment at the centre.
  • Your personal AI action plan: Choosing useful AI applications and developing the confidence to continue learning independently.
Practical activity: Can you trust this answer? Participants examine an AI-generated response, identify potential errors or risks, practise verification, and create a personal list of five ways they will use AI after the seminar.
